At a new home, confirm the address, containers and collection dates before putting anything out. The previous home’s routine may not apply, even within the same council.
Your moving-in checklist
- Find the local collection service and select your exact address.
- Identify each bin using its label and the council’s accepted-items list.
- Note the next collection of each waste type.
- Check whether garden waste requires a new subscription.
- Establish where and when bins should be presented.
Do not assume a paid service transfers with the property. Check its terms before using an old permit or sticker.
Missing bins or a new-build address
Contact the council about initial provision or replacement. For a new development, the developer or managing agent may also need to help establish the service. Ask how to store waste while waiting and whether any temporary collection is authorised.
There is no single national delivery period or fee. Save the confirmation and follow up using its reference if the stated date passes.
Flats and shared bin stores
Ask the building manager which containers you can use, how to access them and how bulky-item collections are arranged. Do not leave moving boxes where they block doors or other bins.
Flatten accepted cardboard and check extra-recycling rules. Bubble wrap and foam need their own routes; see bubble wrap and polystyrene.
Reset your reminders
Remove or disable reminders for the previous address before setting up the new dates. If using BinMate, check that the new address is supported and that the displayed schedule belongs to it.
Should I copy my neighbour?
Use their advice as a clue, then verify the official dates. Communal and individual services can differ.
